Laboratory Overview | Express complex phenomena with simple rules
Many of the equations modeling natural phenomena are represented by continuous differential equations, and by discretizing differential equations, it becomes possible to perform numerical simulation using computers. In recent years, technology called "ultradiscretization" has been developed that successfully extracts the essential structure of the phenomenon for discretized equations. A cellular automaton, which is one of ultradiscrete systems, is a completely discrete model consisting of only 0's and 1's. Its compatibility with computers is also very good and it can describe many complicated phenomena such as traffic jam and ecosystem. This laboratory aims at the development of numerical method which is the basis for numerical simulation and aiming at clasifying rich mathematical structure hiding behind the discrete and ultradiscrete equation. |
