Laboratory Overview
Regional and community design
We are conducting research by collaboration with citizens, various experts and students, widely in society not limited to the university. The home laboratory is located at Toyosu Campus, but we also have a “Machinaka Laboratory” as a research base for research activities in Tsukishima Chuo Ward. Not only do we aim to accumulate of research results, but we aim to make sure that research contributes to society reliably and build a network of human resources who practically experienced town planning.
Laboratory Character Tokyo is called the “capital of water”, and the charm of the waterfront attracts again. Especially Koto Ward has many internal rivers and canals which are interspersed, and Toyosu area is also expected to utilize waterfront. We are working on utilization of waterfront with residents to realize an attractive space by utilizing waterfront. In 2011, we held a ” floating cafe” as a social experiment using the Toyosu Canal Bridge located behind Shibaura Institute of Technology as a social experiment. Also, we support “Toyosu Suisai Festival” held at the same place in the summer.

For Social Contributions to the World Sustainability First, it is not limited to designing an urban space becoming dense and high-rise, and it is to deal with revival of historical townscapes and landscapes, preservation of a community space or maintenance of “garden” and natural environment. Second, it is not only designing a physical space, but also designing a space with elements of the space from reading local community and historical context in its background. The population of Japan is decreasing. Economic growth does not go well, and the city can not grow steadily. “Demolition of the city” has already begun in the countryside and people will begin to live between big cities and rural villages by identifying “quality of place” and choosing.
